Job Description:

Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions (FACS), a 501(c)(3) non-partisan organization, creates partnerships of faith communities in Northern Virginia to develop local solutions to climate change. FACS believes that climate change is the ethical, religious and moral issue of our time. We have built a powerful interfaith grassroots advocacy movement in Northern Virginia that motivates local and state policy makers to implement concrete actions to reduce greenhouse gases while ensuring those actions are carried out justly. We develop models of interfaith climate action and assist faith communities throughout the DC metropolitan area to develop their own local interfaith climate solutions. We seek an Advocacy and Community Engagement Manager to support, strengthen and grow FACS stakeholders including its faith community network, partners, coalitions and advocacy teams while advancing its campaigns and impact. The Advocacy and Community Engagement Manager, a part-time position, will report to the Executive Director. Responsibilities: Community Outreach and Engagement Identify and recruit new congregational members to join FACS by arranging meetings, participating in community events, speaking engagements, tabling and other opportunities Support FACS strategic initiative to diversify the population it serves by proactively recruiting congregations and individual leaders representing marginalized populations in Fairfax County, including African American, Hispanic, LGBTQ, low income, etc. as well as a focus on engagement of young adults Identify tabling opportunities and represent FACS around the community to build awareness and community support Attend and speak at community functions as a representative of FACS Deepen relationships with faith communities by identifying needs, representing FACS at their environmental/green team meetings and connecting them to programs Maintain and develop partnerships and coalitions with organizations that have compatible goals Advocacy Provide support and leadership to FACS advocacy teams, through management of monthly webinars, trainings, development of talking points and issue papers, annual advocacy meeting and other duties Play a key role in providing research around the development of policy papers and advocacy efforts to advance these priorities. Collaborate with community-based allies to advance FACS advocacy priorities through participation in discussions, meetings, sign-on letters, and dissemination of relevant information Represent FACS at related events, including meetings of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Fairfax County School Board, county committee meetings, partner campaign launches, meetings and programs, and other opportunities Track state and local policy activities relevant to FACS advocacy priorities Program Administration Coordinate educational and outreach programs related to advocacy and greening, including energy justice and faith and the environment workshops Maintain/develop customer relationship management system Event planning support to FACS three core annual events: Advocacy Kickoff (January), Sustainability Awards and Showcase (June) and Virginia Climate Crisis Forum (September) Communications Manage social media plan related to advocacy, outreach and engagement Contribute content for and assembly of web-based newsletter Development of marketing materials, handouts, and other written documents Qualifications: Knowledge of climate change issues is essential, as is the ability to articulate the relationships between faith and climate activism. Strong speaking and writing skills are critical. The successful candidate will have community organizing and/or experience in the political, nonprofit and/or religious fields. She/he will be a self-starter able to communicate with different stakeholders and members of a diverse interfaith and secular community; and a track record of managing simultaneous priorities in an uncertain environment. Adept at managing social media channels on a day-to-day basis Experience working with community organizing groups and their constituencies on policy campaigns, specifically related to communicating complex policies to various constituencies Experience working with local elected officials and communicating priorities Commitment to advancing economic, racial and gender justice essential. Knowledge of Fairfax County climate policies and actions preferred. The ability to speak another language such as Spanish is a plus, but not required. It is preferred that the successful candidate have current membership or background in a faith tradition. The ability to produce consistent, quality work in a fast-paced environment is essential. Willingness to travel around Northern Virginia, most frequently within Fairfax County, and occasionally DC on a regular basis. Requirements: Ability to work evenings and weekends, and will comprise up to 75% of hours on a weekly basis. As this position centers on the geographic region of northern Virginia, a car is mandatory. Mileage and gas will be reimbursed. Commitment: 20 hours a week.
