Our business helps support their way of life and contributes to the survival of a culture that has thrived in a challenging environment/.Background:The Office of Communications and Publishing /(OCAP/) requires assistance at various times with writing, both technical writing and feature writing/. The written products are for both internal and external audiences and may focus on a scientific study, a program, an issue, or a USGS employee/. The products may range from a news release, a feature story for the USGS home page, a social media post, a script for a video or a podcast, an article for the internal Need To Know /(NTK/) newsletter, a brochure, a briefing paper, or a fact sheet/.Purpose:Editorial review of U/.S/. Geological Survey products, such as Open/-File Reports, Scientific Investigations Reports, Professional Papers, Fact Sheets, General Information Products, and other outreach products, Circulars, journal articles or proceedings by USGS authors for outside journals at a comprehensive Tier 2 level of work according to the Publishing Network established guidelines/. Some products will have maps, graphs, cross sections, block diagrams, and photographs/. USGS products will include a simple Tier 1 copy edit of grammar, sentence structure, consistency checks, and completeness of content sections to one another and a Tier 2 comprehensive edit, which includes a Tier 1 edit plus extensive rewriting and/or reorganization of text for comprehension, verification checks, reference citation cross checking with reference lists, reference editing and checking, and policy violations of USGS policy/.Technical Writing:Contractor performs technical writing about earth and biological science topics as assigned/. The language used shall target someone with a technical, but not a scientific, background, typically with an undergraduate degree/. The products may include, but are not limited to, briefing papers, fact sheets, technical announcements, synthesis documents, summaries, instructions, or SOPs/. May be asked to locate, recommend, or select /(but not create/) illustrations, photographs, or other visuals that complement the written product/. Contractor communicates with subject/-matter experts identified by OCAP to develop the product and with the OCAP point of contact to ask questions, clarify instructions, provide status updates, and to resolve issues/. Examples of technical announcements can be found at Technical Announcements /- News /(usgs/.gov/)/.Feature Writing:Contractor performs feature writing about USGS programs, projects, and people as assigned/. The language used shall be engaging and target the general public, typically the 8th grade reading level/. The products may include, but are not limited to, news releases, feature stories for the USGS home page, social media posts, a script for a video or a podcast, an article for the internal NTK newsletter, a brochure, or a fact sheet/. May be asked to locate, recommend, or select /(but not create/) illustrations, photographs, or other visuals that complement the written product/. Contractor communicates directly with subject/-matter experts identified by OCAP to develop the product and with the OCAP point of contact to provide status updates and to resolve issues/. Examples of feature writing can be found at Featured Stories /- News /(usgs/.gov/) and News Releases /- News /(usgs/.gov/)/.QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:+ Minimum of three years experience in technical writing for STEM/-related topics for Technical Writing/. + Minimum of three years experience in feature writing on STEM/-related topics for Feature Writing + Able to work independently in a telework /(remote/) environmentDesired Qualifications:+ Experience with GPO and AP Style and the Plain Writing Act is helpful/. + Understanding of journalistic style writing is helpful/. + A degree or coursework in Geology, Hydrology, Environmental Sciences, Geography, Biology, Chemistry, or Physics is helpful but not necessary/.
