We are seeking a Director of Respiratory Therapy to join our Reston Hospital team! Located in the outskirts of Washington, D.C, Reston Hospital Center is a 233-bed acute-care medical and surgical facility, located in the vibrant Town Center of Reston, known for its lively mix of restaurants, shops, and services.  We are a HCA (Hospital Corporation of America) facility making it a very secure and reputable facility to work with. Responsible for the management and operation of the hospital’s Respiratory Therapy department.  Plans, directs and manages department activities and operations to assure quality service in accordance with all regulatory requirements and standards.  Serves as technical resource for department personnel.  Serves as a role model and organizes the department services to meet the goals and objectives of the hospital mission.  He/she is responsible for the planning, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of the professional, personnel, and fiscal policies of the department.

  1. Per established department policies and procedures, access, educate, administer and appropriately document:
      1. Oxygen Therapy
      2. Aerosol Therapy
      3. Mechanical ventilation/BIPAP
      4. Arterial blood gas obtainment and analysis
      5. Standard pre and/or post bronchodilator bedside pulmonary function studies
      6. Standard electrocardiogram
      7. Holter EKG administration
      8. MDI
      9. CPT
      10. IS
      11. Prepare patient/Assist doctor with Stress Treadmill Testing
      12. EEGs


  1. Respond to all code blue, rapid response and code pink situations at any location on the hospital campus and help establish/maintain airway, support ventilation, suctioning, emergency arterial blood gas sampling and closed chest massage as needed.
  2. Maintain current adult/ infant CPR, PALS and ACLS certifications.
  3. Perform/comply with all department policies, procedures and related documentation as outlined in department policy and procedure manuals.  This includes but is not limited to:  inventory control, quality control, preventative maintenance cleaning, patient charges, infection control, safety, fire, emergency plans, in-service, scheduling outpatients, typing reports, and orientation of new employees as requested.
  4. Transport all necessary equipment to and from patients to site where procedures are to be administered.
  5. Appropriately cleans, processes, reassembles, tests and documents all equipment utilized prior to next patient use, per department policies.
  6. Communicates to staff hospital's mission, strategic goals and establishes departmental goals and measures of success.
  7. Develops and periodically revises departmental plan of organization that defines structure, purpose, working relationships and allocation of resources.
  8. Establishes capital, salary and non-salary budgets annually, consistently with projected workload, productivity targets and new service development.
  9. Routinely prioritizes goals and activities and plans strategies to accomplish them.
  10. Establishes and annually reviews/revises departmental policies, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations.
  11. Plans and directs preparation for all applicable regulatory surveys/inspections/drills.
  12. Identifies new service opportunities for the department, determines feasibility and presents proposal.
  13. Defines roles within the department through development of job descriptions, clearly outlining lines of authority and responsibility.       
  14. Delegates effectively to staff and provides appropriate direction, support and follow-up.
  15. Directs and maintains quality control programs as applicable to the department.
  16. Works collaboratively with other managers and staff on inter/intra departmental services and projects.
  17. Communicates effectively with all staff by conducting monthly staff meetings and using other appropriate communication channels.
  18. Attends Department Manager meetings and then communicates information to staff.
  19. Conducts effective meetings with established agenda and good time management.
  20. Keeps Administrative Manager informed routinely of any staff performance issues, exceptional departmental operations issues.
  21. Motivates staff through building on strengths of the individual and his/her desire to excel.

Graduate of an NBRC approved program for respiratory therapy, qualifying candidate for certification/registry.


Current Commonwealth of Virginia license as a Respiratory Care Practitioner; CRTT or RRT from National Board Respiratory Care (NBRC); BCLS, ACLS, PALS required.  Certification/Registry in neurology or cardiology services provided preferred.


5 years management experience required, director experience preferred.  Previous experience in all aspects of respiratory care required.  Attention to detail and ability to begin projects and see them through to completion with minimum supervision. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.
