The HealthCare Analytics Lead Analyst role exists in order to provide analyses and reporting as part of the HealthCare Analytics team a group which provides critical support for key corporate programs, such as the Patient-Centered Medical Home initiative and Account Reporting. This position requires prior experience in analytics and/or business reporting in a healthcare environment. The incumbent will spend the majority of their time with data management, analysis, and reporting for end users, including all levels of management in a variety of internal departments such as Medical & Networks Management, Sales, Marketing, Actuarial, Strategic Planning and the Office of the CEO well. Analyses and reporting is also provided to external customers such as providers, accounts, and regulatory agencies. The incumbent must also have technical experience using programs to extract, analyze, and manage data from a variety of disparate data sources and systems. The incumbent should be able to work independently with minimal involvement from management and make suggestions to improve the team s quality and efficiency. The incumbent should be able to mentor and assist HealthCare Analytics Analysts and Technicians.


Under the general supervision of a HealthCare Analytics Supervisor or Manager, the incumbent s accountabilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Complete production and ad hoc analyses and reports and review the analyses of other HealthCare Analytics analysts in support of major corporate programs, such as Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH), Account Reporting, quality and cost of care, provider performance, clinical outcomes, and care program operations and efficiency tracking. This may include some or all of the specific skills and functions below:

* Independently work with business units and management to gather/understand business requirements for new project requests.
* Query and analyze claims, operational and vendor data from various environments CareFirst Business Intelligence platforms such as Oracle, and SQL Server databases as well as understand the underlying data structures of each data source.
* Create reports using SQL, SAS, and Microsoft Office applications. This includes designing and framing out the look and feel of each report, ensuring that data is presented in a neat, meaningful format that can be provided to management as well as senior and executive leadership.
* Review the creation of reports and analyses from Senior Analysts and Technicians prior to submission to management.
* Interpret data and provide analytical commentaries to explain or highlight significant findings.
* Create documentation and specifications for new production reports and be able to effectively communicate related methodologies to business users and other TOS staff.
* Participate in work groups to assist in migrating reports into production and utilize business and technical knowledge to perform quality reviews of reports or supporting data in development or post-implementation.
* Periodically represent the department at inter departmental meetings as needs dictate.

2. Coordinate projects that involve multiple team members and oversee the gathering of analyses into an accurate, comprehensive and understandable format. Expand technical and business knowledge through individual research and on-the-job training. Participate in Data & Informatics meetings and facilitate information exchange with people in other departments and/or external customers. Expand knowledge of the systems, methods, practices, procedures, policies, regulations followed at CareFirst and develop technical skills including but not limited to SQL and SAS Enterprise Guide. Mentor and assist HealthCare Analytics Analysts and Technicians.

3. Contribute to the continual improvement of the department by developing efficient methods for extracting data from source systems, automating processes, developing neat and accurate end-user reports, and expanding the use of new technologies as the need arises. Generate clear and concise documentation for all projects. Excellent organizational skills and ability to set priorities and handle multiple projects concurrently.

4. Perform individual team administrative duties including status reporting, daily project time reporting, and self/peer/project assessments.

The candidate may work on multiple projects and initiatives, or be allocated to a single project, as business priorities dictate. Incumbent may be working on corporate initiatives and/or key corporate imperatives such as: PCMH, Account Reporting, Hospital Transition of Care, and Provider Efficiency Scoring. Work produced could have a high level of exposure among all levels of CareFirst management (including the CEO and Officers) and/or external providers and Accounts, and could directly or indirectly have financial impacts (e.g., data ultimately used in calculating provider payments)


Required Experience/Skills/Abilities:

* A college degree in Healthcare, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related discipline OR equivalent experience. Experience must include 5 - 7 years of analytics and/or business reporting experience in a healthcare or related environment.
* Additionally, this position requires demonstrated proficiency with multiple reporting applications and tools, including MS Excel, Access, Word, and SQL/database querying.
* Excellent analytical skills. Must be able to not only extract and manipulate data but understand what the data represents; to review information critically and ensure that it is accurate and reasonable within the context that it is presented.
* The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Excellent project management and organizational skills. Must be flexible and willing to work additional hours as necessary to complete work during critical deadlines and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
* Good oral and written communications abilities; strong interpersonal skills for customer interfacing.
* Must be able to effectively work in a fast paced environment with frequently changing priorities, deadlines, and workloads that can be variable for long periods of time. Must be able to meet established deadlines and handle multiple customer service demands from internal and external customers, within set expectations for service excellence. Must be able to effectively communicate and provide positive customer service to every internal and external customer, including customers who may be demanding or otherwise challenging.
